Understanding and customizing the 'category' field...

Hello Medplum Team! I have a question about the variable type for 'category' in the AllergyIntolerance resource and how to use it. To give a bit of context: Most resources, such as 'Condition', have the 'category' variable of type CodeableConcept[]. This allows us to personalize and add new categories. For instance, category[0] may classify whether the condition is a problem-list-item or an encounter-diagnosis as defined by Medplum, and category[1] may classify if a condition is relevant or not relevant. However, the AllergyIntolerance resource defines the 'category' variable as type code[]. This makes it difficult to add new categories to personalize how we classify allergies. Since 'category' is of type code, and the code is defined as food | medication | environment | biologic, it seems we cannot personalize the content of category[1]. I am wondering about the reasoning behind defining 'category' as code[] instead of CodeableConcept[]. Is it possible to define new 'codes' such as 'relevant' and 'not relevant'? If that is not the case, where would you recommend we store that information? Thank you in advance for your help!

Good question - and this is actually a question for the FHIR people and not specific to Medplum!

@veronique_82422 , for these kinds of questions to the FHIR specification authors, I'd recommend reaching out on chat.fhir.org. They are another supportive community, and many of the participants are directly involved in authoring the spec
