Chained search with :below modifier
# support
n
Hey team- searched around discord, docs, and repo but couldn't find a clear answer: 1. Does Medplum support the
:above
and
:below
search modifiers [for searching hierarchies](https://hl7.org/fhir/R4/search.html#recursive)*? For example-
/Location?partof:below=Location/12345
It seems as if that's generating just one
Condition
in the query builder
Copy code
{
  operator: '=',
  parameter: 'Location/12345',
  parameterType: undefined,
  column: Column {
    tableName: 'T2',
    columnName: 'partof',
    raw: undefined,
    alias: undefined
  }
}
2. If it does support this and I'm mistaken or if it's on the roadmap, would/should it support `:above`/`:below` as part of a chained search? I.e.
/Observation?subject:Location.partof:below=Location/12345
. It's not even clear from the [spec](https://hl7.org/fhir/R4/search.html#recursive) if that's intended usage.

Yeah I saw that too. I think that only works for [token](https://www.hl7.org/fhir/R4/search.html#token) and [URI](https://www.hl7.org/fhir/R4/search.html#uri) but I’m not ruling out user error. I should have been more clear in the original that this is specifically for
:above
and
:below
on [hierarchical references](https://www.hl7.org/fhir/R4/search.html#recursive)
Added some clarity to the original question- safe to say that
:above
and
:below
for hierarchical data is not yet supported? https://hl7.org/fhir/R4/references.html#circular
Copy code
Hierarchical references with search parameters (can have :above and :below modifiers on search parameters):

* CarePlan.basedOn (based-on)
* CarePlan.replaces (replaces)
* CarePlan.partOf (part-of)
* Encounter.partOf (part-of)
* Location.partOf (partof)
* Organization.partOf (partof)
* StructureDefinition.baseDefinition (base)
