Where is the best tutorial on how to run the examples/medplum-hello-world example? I get many errors when following the steps in the README and am wondering if I don't have the right node, etc. versions or other dependencies.

hello there! Looks like you are trying to build from the monorepo (https://github.com/medplum/medplum), which requires building some of the libraries from source. If you just want to build the hello world, perhaps consider cloning and building this repo instead? (Ignore the /medplum/medplum repo) https://github.com/medplum/medplum-hello-world

+1 to @reshma 's suggestion. We really only recommend cloning the root repository if you're planning on contrinuting to medplum
