Hi Medplum team,
I’m running into an issue with DocumentReference resources that use external URLs, specifically those coming from Medsender’s fax service.
Previously, our fax workflow worked seamlessly. A bot would create a DocumentReference with an external URL (for example, storage.googleapis.com/m7r-rec/...). The system would then automatically process that file — downloading it, uploading it into Medplum’s binary storage, and updating the DocumentReference to point to the Medplum-hosted URL. After that, users could safely tag or rename the document within the app.
Recently, the automatic “System” processing step seems to have stopped happening. The DocumentReference resources are still created with external URLs, but they’re never copied into Medplum’s storage. After a few minutes, those external URLs expire and the files become unavailable.
When I compare working and non-working examples, healthy records show three versions — Bot → System → User — while the recent ones skip the system step entirely, showing only Bot → User. There haven’t been any code changes on our side, so this behavior appears to have started recently.
Could you clarify whether Medplum previously had a built-in feature that automatically processed external URLs in DocumentReference resources? If so, has that feature been changed, disabled, or removed?
Thank you so much for your help,
Borna
