Creating insurance provider organizations. Why are...

Our app will have a drop down where the patient selects "AETNA", "Blue Cross" etc, and I assume we create organizations and then load them with the medplum input component. This works. The question is: Why do we have to create the organizations? We dont know what to enter for the different fields. Is there a list of the existing insruance providers so we can import them using JSON or something like that? If not, who would create these orgs? Someone that works in medical billing? A practitioner? Do we just google around and try our best? Does it not matter what we put in because its all semantic, or does it matter if we want interoperability, with STEDI, for example?

I'm not an expert on this but you might check out this: https://www.stedi.com/healthcare/network
I think Stedi has a Payer API or something like that... but I'm still sorting that out myself! Good luck! :-). And let us know what you figure out!

Hi @oscadev , we actually have a product to help with this. We're still working on getting documentation on this, but we have a Medplum "Payor Directory"
This is a dataset of
Organization
resources that we maintain, that represent 1000s of Insurance Payors. Each of these Organizations has a list of
identifiers
that help map them to different system. Currently we support 3 different identifiers on payors: - Health Gorilla Ids: used for ordering labs with our Health Gorilla Labs integration - Candid CHC IDs: Used for submitting to Change HealthCare clearing houses for revenue cycle management - Candid Availity IDs: Used for submitting to Availity HealthCare clearing houses for revenue cycle management
If you share your project id, I'm happy to enable that dataset for your
@oscadev I wanted to check in to see if still wanted access to our Payor Directory
