Yes, I think that plan should work (?) Devil is in the details. We have a low-priority long term goal to convert the FHIRPath implementation to use RFC6901 JSON Pointers, so in addition to getting the value, you would also get the pointer/handle, which would allow for efficient manipulation. That's pie in the sky future work though.
